I don't know anything about bikes
I want to ask for a bike for Christmas, but because I don't ride I have no idea what I should ask for. Should I get a mountain bike or is that too serious? Does it really matter if I am just learning how to ride?

Depends what you are looking at as far as mountain bikes. If you just want something to ride around town you probably don't need the shock/suspension systems, disk brakes or any of that nonsense. You're best bet would to probably go for a so called "hybrid" bike, which has a mountain bike-like frame but with tires that are not so wide. This will make it easier to ride around.
Make sure you get a nice seat if you are planning on doing anything other than just go from A to B in under 10-15 minutes. There's nothing worse than being numb you-know-where after 150-160k's on top of normal tiredness.
Stay in Wisconsin and get a Trek. Unless if you are going for some sort of custom or specialized bike (e.g. the Cervelo P3C, which is at least a North American company), they definitely have the best product around.
