Why do people drink?
Drinking to me seems like such a strange act. I'm putting a harmful chemical down my throat that will hinder my judgment. I would be interested to hear why different people think drinking is important or why you personally drink.
You are not necessarily putting a harmful intoxicant into your body. Wine, for example, has been found to have several health benefits- such as a lower occurrence of high blood pressure and heart disease in those who drink a glass a day. Also, the taste has got to be a pull. Beer is a great example of this. There are so many different variations of Hops and other additives, and taste-testing them all is rather fun. You have dark and light ales, too, and learning what the differences are between them is a test for the true connoisseur. I wouldn't be so quick to judge those who drink or the reasons why people drink. It is a social event, of folkloric proportions-- in almost every prior civilization people have drank. That being said, I do not condone binge drinking or heavy amounts of it, either. When used in moderation, alcohol is an addition to life, not a take away.
I don't drink so I have a different perspective on the subject. I would surmise though that the motivation probably boils down to culture, peer pressure, and perhaps taste. Elizabeth said that wine is good for you but this is not really correct. The lower blood pressure from wine comes from the red grape juice that the wine comes from. So while the wine does have the one positive effect you can get that just by drinking juice. And that saves you from the underestimated negative effects of consuming alcohol. The negative effects of alcohol are much worse that any small positive effect from wine.

I don't really know...but it is really fun when done in a controlled fashion.
It's kind of unfortunate in a way, but alcohol seems to be mostly about socializing, as it weakens the inhibitions--especially awkwardness.
It also does relieve worries/anxiety, but only in the short term, so although some people drink for this reason, I don't recommend it.
Taste is a factor as well, but if it wasn't for the social aspects of alcohol, people would probably just have a soda at the bar.
