Microfinancing in the States

I was having a random thought when I was out on a walk tonight. What if there was a way to lend money to poor people in your community with the hope of getting a return on your investment? I don't know how it would work, but I want to hear your thoughts on my idea. My roommate and girlfriend think I'm crazy:)

Kiva.org - it's a microlending website where you can pick your organization/individual of choice and you get paid back (eventually). When you do, you can withdraw your funds or reinvest them with someone else. We've featured them on the show, seehttp://www.wpr.org/hereonearth/archive_070619k.cfm

Maria brings up an excellent point. Kiva.org already does microfinancing for impoverished people who have ideas worth investing in. Two points though - 1) Is their idea only applicable in the third world or can it be applied to the U.S. 2) What will be their growth potential in the coming time? Many people have hypothesized that there are only so many entrepenurial people who do not have proper resources and will offer a good investment for people. Could you offer a comprehensive system that would reach out to more people, and could maintain the same amount of risk? Food for thought:)
