Which of the Presidential candidates has the better energy policy and why?
I want to believe from hearing the news that Barack does though I haven't heard much about either set of views. I heard something about McCain wanting to drill more and Barack said something about alternative energy, $1000, and tire pressure.
My energy policy is that we start sharing resources before we run out, however, I'd probably be labeled as too far left with my views.
Tell me what you all think.

Obama's energy policy and commentary, straight from his website:
1. Provide short-term relief to American families facing pain at the pump
(In other words--tax the rich and give the poor free money to buy gas with. Maybe they should use public transportation if they can't afford their SUV's?)
2. Help create five million new jobs by strategically investing $150 billion over the next ten years to catalyze private efforts to build a clean energy future.
(Sounds like a good idea, but where is this money coming from? Are we going to tax the rich for this too?)
3. Within 10 years save more oil than we currently import from the Middle East and Venezuela combined.
(I agree--but how exactly are we going to do this again?)
4.Put 1 million Plug-In Hybrid cars -- cars that can get up to 150 miles per gallon -- on the road by 2015, cars that we will work to make sure are built here in America.
(How many new coal/gas power plants are we going to have to build to provide all this energy? I'm guessing it would be in the hundreds!!! Good luck heating your house if this goes through.)
5. Ensure 10 percent of our electricity comes from renewable sources by 2012, and 25 percent by 2025.
(I think everyone supports this)
6. Implement an economy-wide cap-and-trade program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050.
(Why 2050? He'll be dead by then and never be held accountable? Why not say 10% by 2015? Because it would come back to bite him in the butt, that's why!)
-----vs. John McCain------
1. Expanding Domestic Oil And Natural Gas Exploration And Production
(Obama and McCain agree on this, although Obama just recently decided that it was the cool thing to do)
2. The Nation Cannot Reduce Its Dependency On Oil Unless We Change How We Power Our Transportation Sector--McCain proposes a $5000 tax credit to people who buy a zero-emissions car, a commercial prize of $300 million for a hybrid battery, more FFVs, eliminating farm subsidies, and enforcing CAFE standards
(Hey, this sounds like a well developed energy plan. Where was this on Obama's website?)
3. Investing In Clean, Alternative Sources Of Energy--this includes green jobs, investing in clean coal, building 45 nuclear power plants, and tax credits for researching alternative energy
(So, the basic difference is that Obama wants to give the tax credits to low/middle class families and McCain wants to give them to companies and research institutes to develop alternative energies and especially batteries to power those magic plug-in cars that Obama proposes. Secondly, McCain supports clean coal and nuclear, both of which will be necessary in the next 50 years as we transition to a new post-carbon economy. Of course these are controversial--nobody likes coal or nuclear--maybe Obama is afraid of supporting anything that might tarnish his pretty image?)
4. Protecting Our Environment And Addressing Climate Change: A Sound Energy Strategy Must Include A Solid Environmental Foundation
Greenhouse Gas Emission Targets And Timetables:
2012: Return Emissions To 2005 Levels (18 Percent Above 1990 Levels)
2020: Return Emissions To 1990 Levels (15 Percent Below 2005 Levels)
2030: 22 Percent Below 1990 Levels (34 Percent Below 2005 Levels)
2050: 60 Percent Below 1990 Levels (66 Percent Below 2005 Levels)
(Wait--this guy is a Republican, right? He actually has goals to be met in 4 years instead of 42? The goals are actually realistic? Somebody wake me up, I must be dreaming! Oh--in addition, both McCain and Obama support the Cap-and-Trade system.)
5. Energy efficiency--John McCain Will Make Greening The Federal Government A Priority Of His Administration. The federal government is the largest electricity consumer on earth and occupies 3.3 billion square feet of space worldwide. It provides an enormous opportunity to lead by example.
(Really, the federal government leads by example right now--as in the example of what not to do! I didn't see this anywhere on Obama's website, he's too busy going after big oil's windfall profits)
6. Addressing Speculative Pricing Of Oil. John McCain Does Not Support A Windfall Profits Tax. A windfall profits tax on the oil companies will ultimately result in increasing our dependence on foreign oil and hinder investment in domestic exploration. Jimmy Carter put a windfall profits tax in to place with little to no useful results.
(Wait--the high oil prices are due to speculation and not the "evil" oil companies--which by the way are owned and operated by Americans? Who would have thought?)
------------------
So, by now it's clear that McCain blows Obama away on energy policy. I'm not a McCain ass kisser, and I think Obama is better than McCain on a number of issues. However, energy is one area where McCain blows away Obama.
Disclaimers: I just finished reading (and agreeing with) a book that blasted presidents Reagan and Bush on their energy policies and I took a class on the Global Environment last spring. I am not a Republican.
